Canandaigua Parent Teacher Student (PTSA)

This is a one-time/short-term volunteer opportunity

The Canandaigua PTSA utilizes volunteers throughout the school year in a variety of ways. Weekly, monthly, and one time only volunteers are needed. Some PTSA events which require volunteers are: Book Fairs in the Primary, Elementary and Middle schools in October and November, weekly laminating in the Primary and Elementary schools, weekly/biweekly copying at the Middle school, testing breakfast set up at the Elementary and Middle schools in April, Square One Art project in the Spring, a K-5 Read-a-thon “Reading Rocks” event in April and monthly help with our PTSA Flyer. Before you can begin to volunteer, you must attend a required orientation that lasts approximately 1½ hours, complete paperwork and show a form of ID verification that this is you (driver's license).

Even Start is a family literacy program that serves low literate, low income families from Sodus, Lyons, and North-Rose-Wolcott. Even Start teaches parents to teach their children ages birth-8 to prepare their children for school. This is accomplished through home-based and center-based programming at the Even Start LIteracy Center in Sodus. The volunteer would be asked to assist in center based programming, which is currently on Monday 3-5:30, and Wed 10-1, 1-3 and 4;30-7:30. The volunteer might also be asked to help with program planning, center based prep, and general office work as it pertains to programming.

The application, screening and orientation process takes approximately two months. After your paperwork is in order, the next step is to attend a New Volunteer Orientation. This orientation provides each candidate with an overview of Make-A-Wish Foundation®, our mission and history, policies and guidelines, and volunteer placements within the organization. New Volunteer Orientation is held every two to three months and is essential to your success as a Make-A-Wish® volunteer.

Ontario ARC's Pathways Program

Ontario ARC's newest program, Pathways, focuses on helping individuals with developmental disabilities develop employment skills while exploring their social interests.

Volunteers are needed to provide instruction in eight week classes, that typically meet once a week for about 45 minutes. Classes include: Exercise and nutrition, problem solving & conflict resolution, money management (basic budgeting & balancing your checkbook), basic computer training, gardening, sewing/knitting/quilting, dining etiquette, work place attitude, cooking, photography, scrapbooking, craft projects, sign language, self defense, etc.

Immediate Need for upcoming event: A fundraising event to benefit the Phelps Arts Center will be held at Ventosa Winery in Geneva, Saturday, February 11, 8 p.m. - midnight. Between January 15 - February 3, we need volunteers interested in decorating a blank mask for our Masquerade Venetian Ball. Masks will be used by participants then auctioned off. Blank masks are available for you to pick up at the Phelps Art Center, decorate and return by the Friday, February 3 deadline. On Friday, February 10, we need volunteers to help with last minute preparation for the Masquerade Ball at the Phelps Art Center, from 1 - 4 p.m.

On Saturday, February 11, we need two or three people to be at the Masquerade Ball at 7:30 p.m. to set up the decorated masks table and watch over the masks proceedings.

Our Volunteers are the backbone of the House, caring for the physical needs of our residents, holding hands, reading out loud, talking, laughing even crying. Other duties include laundry, running the dishwasher and running errands. All Volunteers work 4 hour shifts, in pairs, and there is always a Nurse on call.
