Frequently Asked Questions: Placement Testing
Q: Must I take these tests?
A: All students who are pursuing a degree or seeking to enroll in Freshman English (ENG 101) must test, unless they
- have previously received an associate or bachelor's degree* OR
- are high school graduates and have completed a course equivalent to Finger Lakes Freshman English with a grade of C- or better* OR
- are high school graduates and have received advanced placement credit for Freshman English with a minimum score of 3* OR
- are re-entry students who previously completed Freshman English and/or the Basic Skills tests at Finger Lakes.
*A transcript noting successful completion must be received by the Admissions Office prior to your registration date.
Q: When can I take them?
A: Basic skills tests are offered on a regular basis, view a complete list of testing dates and times.
Q: How do I sign up for testing?
A: To sign up for a specific testing session, call the Center for Advisement and Personal Development at (585) 394-3500, ext. 7604.
Q: How long does testing take?
A: We recommend that students allow a minimum of 2 hours for testing. In cases where math or music tests are also administered, 2 ½ hours is more likely.
Q: Is there a fee for taking the tests?
A: Basic Skills testing is offered without charge.
Q: When will I receive the test results?
A: Students learn their test results from an advisor at registration. Test scores cannot be shared by telephone.
