Academic Computing Resources

During regular semesters, the labs in the Instructional Computing Center are open 7:30 AM -11:00 PM weekdays, closing at 5 on Fridays, open on Saturdays 9-5 and Sundays 11-5. During vacations or short semesters, hours will be shorter. Always check the posted notice at the lab entrance for open times. Teaching labs are open to others only if there is no class in session. Class schedules are posted on lab doors. The Open Lab, B387, never has scheduled classes.

You can look up the available systems and software in each location. Brochures describing computing services and policies for staff and students are available in the Instructional Computing Center, near the Help Desk. Quick reference sheets for various tasks are also available there.

Standard Academic Computer Equipment
  • Pentium computers running Microsoft Windows XP are in all microcomputer labs. All systems have audio output for users who attach their own headphones.  CD drives are available in B390 and at every instructor station. Instructional interactive video systems for nursing students are in A323.
  • Laptop computers for faculty can be borrowed for a few days from Kay Carlisi.
  • An AXP Minicomputer for student Email, personal Web pages, and programming is accessible from all networked computers with a Secure Shell (SSH) connection. The AXP system, running RedHat Linux, is administered by Sam Iraci.
  • Printing on dot matrix printers is available in most labs, with continuous feed paper provided by Instructional Computing.
  • Laser Printing on your own paper is available in all labs. Color printing is available in B366, B385, B386, B390, C322 and C433. Special paper for better quality or transparency stock for color overheads are available from Kay Carlisi.
  • Plotting on A thru E size paper can be done in B366. Paper is available from Mechanical Tech faculty.
  • Image scanners are available in B366, B372, B385, B390 and C433.
  • Systems for the visually impaired, with audio output and large screen zoom software, are located in B387, B385, B373, and the library. A scanning text reader with audio output is available in B373.
  • Multimedia presentation systems with projection are in the four ETEC rooms (A102, A103, A104, and A105), the lecture halls (D214 and D216), most computer labs, and many classrooms.
  • Multimedia systems for hands-on instruction are in B390 (21 stations), C322 (10 stations), B333 (7 stations), A323 (6 stations) and the Institute (13 stations). If "setup" is needed, please ask Kay Carlisi to install and configure the software. Only those CDs which will be used for class work, at the request of the instructor, will be installed.
  • Systems with CD burners for copying stored data files to a recordable CD are in B385, B386, B387, B389, B390, B366, and B367. Instructions are available at the Computer Helpdesk (B388).
