FLCC / ACADEMICS / A.S. BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
The Outlook

The diversity of occupations held by graduates of Business Administration programs accounts for its popularity. Among two-year colleges both public and private, Business Administration is one of the most widely-held degrees, second only to Liberal Arts and Sciences. Both Associate in Science (A.S.) and Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees at Finger Lakes prepare you for the ever-changing business world, allowing you to enter the job market in any number of fields-as service sales representatives, management analysts and consultants, account clerks, credit clerks and authorizers, accounts receivable clerks, store managers, office managers, bank tellers, staff accountants, warehouse managers, and more.

The Program

The Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Business Administration and the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Business Administration, both offered at Finger Lakes Community College, differ in their focus of preparation for students. The A.S. degree is designed to prepare you to transfer to four-year colleges and universities such as SUNY Colleges at Geneseo, Brockport, Cortland and Fredonia, Nazareth College of Rochester, St. John Fisher College, Rochester Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, and Canisius College among others*, to pursue baccalaureate degrees in accounting, business administration, management information systems, and secondary education.

In contrast, the A.A.S. degree is designed to prepare you for employment upon graduation in a variety of positions in the business community, with a broad-based business foundation in accounting and economics as well as intense study in the fields of marketing, management, or business administration. A.A.S. students are also accepted at St. John Fisher College, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Nazareth College of Rochester.*

In addition, the College offers honors courses that provide enhanced educational experiences for students who have demonstrated outstanding academic ability. Enrollment in honors courses is open to qualified students enrolled in this degree program, as well as all other qualified FLCC students. Successful completion of honors courses or an Honors Certificate may increase student transfer options to four-year institutions.

* This is a sampling of some of the four-year colleges and universities to which our students have transferred. Please consult your advisor or the Center for Advisement and Personal Development for a complete listing of transfer agreements between Finger Lakes Community College and four-year institutions.

The Experience

Both the A.S. and the A.A.S. degrees in Business Administration prepare you to face the challenges of an ever-changing and diverse business world. The faculty have real-world experience as managers, business owners, and certified public accountants, and they relate that experience to the theories they teach in class.

Internships play an important role for FLCC Business Administration students. Placement in local businesses and agencies including Ontario County, the City of Geneva, Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce, Canandaigua National Bank, the National Bank of Geneva, Thompson Health, BOCES, and others provides valuable experience and networking opportunities.

As part of the SUNY Learning Network (SLN), students pursuing the Business Administration degree may take the majority of the curriculum requirements online. Students may take a course at a convenient time and place without the need to travel to campus, thus eliminating any time and location restrictions a student may have.

The Graduates

Graduates from both of these programs have successfully transferred with full junior status to many public and private four-year institutions. Others have become payroll coordinators, receipt and inventory managers, customer service specialists, bank tellers, and managers at large and small companies.

The Scholarships

Students who meet specific award criteria are eligible for the Finger Lakes Business Education Partnership Scholarship, Finger Lakes Development Center for Business Scholarship, Carol Scharett Memorial Scholarship, and the Martin Schneider Canandaigua Rotary Scholarship. For details, contact a member of the Business Department faculty or the Financial Aid Office.
